Tier 2 (General) visas are designed to allow skilled workers to come to the UK to fill a gap in the local labour market. Applicants must have a job offer in the UK and be sponsored by a company which is registered with the Home Office.

Your family members (‘dependants’) can apply to join or accompany you to the UK. Your family members must each apply separately for a dependent visa if they’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

They’ll also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application. Check how much they’ll have to pay before they apply.

⇢ Are You Eligible?

Family Members:

A ‘dependant’ is any of the following:
  • Your husband, wife or partner;
  • Your child under 18;
  • Your child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependant.

They’ll also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application. Check how much they’ll have to pay before they apply.

Personal Savings:

You must show that your dependants can be supported while they’re in the UK.

Each dependant must have £630 available to them whether they apply with you or separately. This is in addition to the £945 you must have to support yourself.

You must have proof you have the money! (Rules do apply)

Example: You must have £2,205 if you want to bring your partner and one child with you to the UK (£945 to support yourself plus £630 for your partner and £630 for your child).

You won’t need evidence of your savings if you have a:

  • Fully approved (‘A-rated’) sponsor;
  • Certificate of sponsorship stating that your sponsor will give each of your dependants at least £630 to cover their costs for a month if they need it.
⇢ Mandatory Biometric Appointment

As part of the application process, Tier 2 Sponsorship visa applicants are required to participate in a mandatory biometric appointment which involves having your fingerprints and a photo taken at a visa application centre, or a Biometric Enrolment centre. This is a standard part of the process.

Please note that in Brisbane, Canberra and Perth, you will be required to pay an additional surcharge for your biometric appointment of $105.

For Canadian applicants, an additional surcharge of US$100 is applicable to any biometric appointment. We will discuss these fees with you in advance of your appointment, based on your appointment location in your home country.

⇢ Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Effective 9th January 2019

All Australian, New Zealand and Canadian citizens will be provided with full access to the National Health Service (NHS) for the entire term of their visa. This will grant you full rights to the health services that everyday UK citizens get, including visits to the doctor and the hospital, and access to prescription medications at the same prices.

A health service surcharge of £400 per year for the duration of your visa is payable at the time of purchasing the Tier 2 Dependant Visa. This fee will cover you for the entirety of your visa, whenever you may choose to use it.

When you arrive in the UK and receive your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card, just show the card at appropriate NHS locations to gain access to one of the best healthcare systems in the world.
