Which Visa?
The most commonly issued visas for Australians and New Zealanders wanting to work and travel to the UK are:
This visa type specifically targets young, trained professionals who want to work and live in the UK. The Tier 1 – General Migrant has previously been known as the Highly Skilled Migrant Visa. It is usually offered for an initial period of three years and can often be extended for a further two years.
Tier 5 – Youth Mobility Scheme
Previously known as the Working Holiday Visa, this visa has recently been reclassified and updated as the Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS). The Tier 5 - YMS allows you to travel to the UK for an extended stay (up to 24 months) and work in full or part-time employment to fund your stay.
This visa is granted to individuals aged over 17 years, who have a grandparent that was born in either the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland (prior to 1922). This visa allows you to live and work in the UK, unrestricted, for five years.
The Tier 4 Student Visa is broken up into two categories, ‘Child’ Students (applicants 4-15 years) and Adult/General’ Students (applicants over 17 years) Applicants aged 16-17 years have the option of applying under either category. You and your approved education provider should agree whether you need to apply for an adult or child student visa. Note that if you come over as a Child Student, you must be coming to the United Kingdom to be educated at an independent fee-paying school.
This visa allows you to enter the UK as a tourist. You are free to holiday throughout the UK, but are not permitted to work. This visa issued for 6 months, unless you are applying for a long term (1,2,5,10 years) visitor visa. Generally Commonwealth citizen, don’t require a visa to visit for up to 6 months. Tier 2 – Sponsored Skilled Worker
Previously referred to as a work permit or professional sponsorship, the Tier 2 visa allows an individual to travel to the UK for a specific job that the employer is unable to fill from the local market.
