What’s a Hostel?

A hostel or youth hostel is a form of affordable shared accommodation for travellers.  Guests stay in either private or dormitory rooms with shared facilities for washing, cooking and recreation.  Usually independently owned, many are in the most amazing locations and buildings, e.g. on a boat on the River Danube in Hungary, on a farm in Ireland, in a former prison in Canada or in a listed Victorian building in London. Many of these even have their own bars and restaurants.

Our Hostel search engine  is a great site for researching and booking hostel accommodation before you arrive in a particular country, as it offers instant online reservations at thousands of Hostels throughout Europe and other continents around the world. You can read up to the minute hostel reviews, view photographs and read detailed descriptions of all the hostels.

While we totally understand the thrill of rocking up to a unknown point on the map and figuring it all out when you get there, we suggest that you arrange as much of your accommodation as possible before you leave home.   The alternative can see you wandering the streets of a new town or city for hours (not fun after a long flight and a heavy pack on your back) looking for a place to stay.
